The gallery consists of two buildings. The West Building was built 100 years ago in Roman style, used to display classical and modern art works. The east-facing building, designed by architect IM Pei and built in the 70s, displays modern works.
This is home to the largest collection of classical works in Washington DC, focusing mainly on paintings, statues, photographs... of European and American artists. Visitors will see classic works by famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Vermeer and Rembarndt, as well as "newer" works by Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock and Roy Lichtenstein.
On clear days, take a stroll in the Sculpture Garden, which hosts Jazz shows in the summer, and the ice skating rink in the winter. In the Sculpture Garden are works by Marc Chagall and Joan Miró, and especially the famous "AMOR" work by Robert Indiana.
