MT. Takao is one of the closest natural areas to the city, just 50 minutes by train from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station. MT. Takao is a great spot for hiking, with several trails that cross the mountain and lead to a peak at 599 meters.
A network of numbered hiking trails leads up the slopes of Takao. Most visitors use trail 1, which is wide, mostly paved and passes all the major sites as it winds to the top of the 599-meter peak. Other trails are narrower, unpaved, and have less traffic. The hike to the top of Mount Takao along trail 1 takes about 90 minutes from the base, but that time can be cut in half by using the cable car or elevator that leads halfway up the mountain
Near the top station of the cable car, there is an observatory from which you can look out over Tokyo, while the top can overlook Mount Fuji on clear days. An even larger network of hiking trails beyond Mount Takaosan connects to the many peaks of nearby Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. Considered a sacred mountain, Takaosan has been the center of mountain worship for over 1000 years. Yakuoin, an attractive shrine, is located along the trail near the summit, and many visitors stop there to pray to the Shinto-Buddhist mountain deities (tengu) for good luck. Statues of the gods, one with a long nose and the other with a crow's beak, can be found at the shrine and other spots around
In spring, you can head to the Itchodaira area for one of the best collections of cherry trees in the Tokyo area . In the fall, the mountain glows with the fiery red of autumn — beautiful reds, yellows, and purples that completely transform the area. Near the base of the mountain is the wonderful Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu hot spring, great for relaxing after a day of hiking. Not far away is the 599 Takao Museum, where you learn about the nature and ecology of Mt. Takao and surrounding areas. From the top of the mountain, on a clear day, you will be able to see the view of the Snow Covered Mountain. Fuji. Get up early to catch the best views.
