Piazza del Popolo (meaning People's Square) is located inside the city's north gate, which was once known as Porta Flaminia. The square is located at the beginning of Via Flaminia and was the main entrance to the city during the Roman Empire. Piazza del Popolo was the place where foreigners came to the city during the times of the Empires

Piazza del Popolo is one of the most beautiful squares in the world surrounded by historic structures such as the Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the gateway to the Porta del Popolo and the Basilica Parrocchiale. Located on the main road to the north, the square remains the strategic location of the city. Three important street sections from the square: left, Via del Babuino; on the right, Via di Ripetta and to the center of Via del Corso, one of Rome's main high streets.

In the center of the square is a huge cylindrical Egyptian monument dedicated to Ramesses II, called Flaminio Obelisk. This monument was erected at Circus Maximus in the tenth century and moved to Piazza del Popolo in 1589.

Many visitors come to Piazza del Popolo to see Santa Maria del Popolo, a basilica featuring two beautiful Caravaggio paintings and splendid Renaissance decoration.

Two other churches look up into the square; Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto. These two temples look exactly the same from the outside, but hide some differences inside.

An impressive view of the square can be obtained by climbing the stairs, located on the east side of the square, to Pincio Hill Park, which offers excellent views of the square and Rome.
