The Bac Lieu longan orchard has long been famous not only for its elegant sweetness and captivating aroma but also for its ancient longan trees that are over a hundred years old. These trees, with their gnarled and twisting forms resembling works of art, have become a symbol of this region. Locals refer to them as "ancient longan," representing not just fruit but also a testament to the history and culture of Bac Lieu.

To reach the longan orchard, you only need to travel about 6 kilometers from the city center along the road named after the late musician Cao Văn Lầu. You will catch a glimpse of the expansive orchard, which spans over 230 hectares, stretching from Hiệp Thành to Vĩnh Trạch Đông. According to local residents, this longan orchard was planted over a hundred years ago. The land was once a sand dune formed by natural sedimentation and human efforts to build dikes and reclaim land, creating an ideal environment for growing fruit trees.

In the early 19th century, Chinese immigrants arrived, and Mr. Trương Hưng was the first to bring Su-bíc and Tu-huýt longan varieties from China to plant here. The Su-bíc variety is renowned for its large fruit, thin skin, thick flesh, and delicious taste. Although the Tu-huýt variety produces smaller fruit, it is equally appealing with its sweet flavor. Both longan varieties thrive in Bac Lieu's sandy soil, particularly the Su-bíc, which has become a favorite among locals.

The ancient longan trees in Bac Lieu are not just places to grow fruit; they also symbolize the bond among the Kinh, Hoa, and Khmer ethnic groups in the development of this land. Each ancient longan tree holds cultural and historical value, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of Bac Lieu.

The ideal time to explore the longan orchard is in May and September. May is when the longan flowers bloom beautifully, creating a stunning white landscape, while September marks the harvest season when visitors can enjoy the sweet longan fruit.

Visitors to the orchard can relax under the shady trees, breathe in the fresh air, and listen to the sounds of traditional folk songs and tài tử music. During the longan ripening season, you can join locals in harvesting and taste the delicious fruit that embodies the essence of the countryside.

Today, these hundred-year-old longan trees are still cared for and preserved as part of the cultural heritage of the region. Bac Lieu continuously researches and cultivates new longan varieties, notably the Thanh longan, a mutated strain of Bac Lieu longan that has received trademark certification. Thanh longan is characterized by its large size, fragrant aroma, thick flesh, and dryness, as well as its resistance to dragon's hair disease, making it one of the province’s signature specialties.

The Bac Lieu longan orchard is not only an attractive tourist destination but also a place that preserves the unique cultural and historical values of the Mekong Delta, where visitors can enjoy the natural beauty and sweet flavors of this land.
