The center is named after the former governor of Texas and is the replacement site for the former theaters.

The center was built by general contractor Lyda Swinerton and designed by Robert AM Stern Architects (an architectural firm based in New York City). The architecture of this place is inspired by the legendary Herts & Tallant theater and the main building materials are limestone, brick, painted steel columns, glass walls and metal roof with vertical seams.

The center's Grand Lobby is a three-story, gold-leaf ceiling and impressive roof supported by tubular steel columns, and offers sweeping views of the park and the city centre. The six-story glass facade allows natural light during the day or golden light of the evening to illuminate the entire space. The lobby doors open onto a spacious outdoor terrace. The Grand Lobby is the perfect venue for sumptuous dinners, lunches or receptions and has hosted gala dinners, awards ceremonies, broadcasts, business meetings and weddings. The work "Wall Drawing 2002" by American artist Sol LeWitt is also displayed here.

A classic restaurant inspired by the long heritage of grilling rooms located near major American theaters called Diana American Grill is also integrated inside the center. The elegant, modern restaurant is named after Diana Hobby, who impacted the Houston community in many ways and played a key role in founding the center of the performing arts.

The Center for Performing Arts includes two large theaters, Sarofim and Zilkha, for performances.

The Sarofim Theater is a mirror image of the opulent and legendary European and Broadway theatres, providing an exceptional cultural and entertainment environment for visitors and performers. Inspired by early 20th-century theater designers, the architect created his own 2,650-seat theatrical masterpiece with green walls, soaring multi-storey gold-leaf columns, and an intricate grid system. throughout. The ceiling is spectacular with more than 2,000 fiber optic stars simulating the Texas summer night sky and a shooting star every 5 minutes. The theater is designed and equipped to accommodate the most complex and elaborate performances with an orchestra of 60 musicians and a large dressing room.

The Zilkha Theater is a beautiful jewel box with its warm deep pink color and cherry wood accents providing an intimate setting for a variety of performances and cultural events. With great acoustics, warm deep pink tones and walnut accents, Zilkha Hall has two floors with 500 seats. It is home to the Unique Houston show, which promotes the artistic growth and reputation of small and medium-sized performing arts groups in the Houston metropolitan area.
