Coi Nguon Museum

Amidst the massive wave of billion-dollar mega-resorts, a local man quietly spent over a decade collecting broken pottery shards and animal bones to build a "private museum" to preserve the island's original soul.

Coi Nguon Museum is the first and only private museum in Phu Quoc, located on the bustling Tran Hung Dao street in Duong Dong ward. It is a cultural destination that preserves the history, ecology, and daily life stories of the indigenous people since the early days of land reclamation.

Officially opened in 2009, the museum features a 5-story exhibition building and an outdoor area of about 1.5 hectares. Currently, it houses over 3,000 precious artifacts, including more than 300 ancient documents, 15th-century shipwreck ceramics, and skeletons of giant marine animals.

3. History of Formation

The father of this project is Mr. Huynh Phuoc Hue, a son born and raised in Phu Quoc. Realizing that rapid tourism development could erode the core values of his hometown, he wandered through every corner of the island to collect each artifact. The name "Coi Nguon" (Roots) was born with the desire to remind future generations of the island's origins and heroic history.

The museum is divided into 5 floors with distinct themes: The island's formation history, Natural conditions, Antiquities from shipwrecks, History of struggle, and Folk culture. The most notable exhibits are the Dugong (sea cow) skeleton, giant whale bones, and ancient labor tools illustrating the arduous reclamation period of the first inhabitants.

5. Notable Highlights

Beyond indoor exhibits, Coi Nguon Museum is a miniature eco-zone. Stepping outdoors, visitors can witness the Phu Quoc Ridgeback Dog conservation area—a rare native hunting breed, sea eagle enclosures, and traditional stilt houses simulating the rural life of the past.
