This 100-year-old Roman Catholic basilica sits on a hillock in Bandra overlooking the Arabian Sea. It attracts believers from all faiths to pray and seek blessings from Our Lady. The church was built in the Neo-Gothic architectural style. There are seven white marble steps that lead visitors to a statue of Our Lady holding her son Jesus Christ in her right hand. The wooden statue is crowned with a veil of white and gold flowing down the top marble step. The murals depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The doors open from either side bringing in a salty and cool sea breeze, and whether you come here on faith or not, you can count on leaving refreshed.
Although the present structure of the church is relatively modern, the history behind the statue of Our Lady dates back to the 16th century when Jesuit priests from Portugal brought the statue to its present location. and build a chapel. In 1700, Arab pirates cut off the statue's right hand, causing the statue to become disfigured. In 1760, the church was rebuilt and the statue was replaced by a statue of the Virgin Mary in nearby St Andrew's Church.
A week-long festival takes place here in September to celebrate the birthday of Our Lady. Known as the Bandra Fair, thousands of devotees come here during that time to take part in the festive activities that take place, in and around the lavishly decorated church. Many stalls selling religious artifacts, antiques, candles and baked goods were also set up.
