Profile
The Institute of Oceanography is located at No. 1, Cau Da, Nha Trang, about 10 minutes by car from the city center, which specializes in studying marine species in terms of behavior and lifestyle. The Institute is also the earliest scientific research place built in Vietnam.
The Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute's collection is so rich that it spans two floors in a French colonial building at Cau Da (about 6km south of Nha Trang city center). The ground floor features multi-sized glass tanks filled with marine life such as reef sharks, turtles, scorpionfish, sea anemones, puffins and lionfish, as well as coral reefs and seaweed from many parts of the world. For clarity, each tank is also labeled with its name, origin, and characteristics in Vietnamese and English.
Meanwhile, the upper floor of the Vietnam National Oceanographic Museum displays thousands of specimens, animal skeletons, local boats and preserved fishing artefacts. One of the highlights of the museum is the skeleton of a humpback whale, unearthed in Henan province in 1994. The specimen measures 18 meters in length and weighs 18,000 kilograms. Also on display here is the skeleton of a dugongs unearthed in Con Dao in 1997.
Visitors can also enjoy a number of themed exhibits on the development of oceanography and research technology, as well as rooms illustrating natural disasters, sacred legends and traditions, and the culture of war. fish in Vietnam.
