Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the main reason people visit Pisa – a special structure famous worldwide for its remarkable tilt. Built in the 12th century after the church, it was soon found that the foundation was unstable and the building began to tilt. Besides posing for fun photos, the architecture of the tower is really amazing and the 6 rows of stone arches are simple but beautiful. Furthermore, you can climb to the top of the tower for a surreal tilted view of the surrounding city.

In 1174, engineer Bonano Pisano built a marble platform large enough to park about 16 Ferrari 328s and began building a campsite for the church and the Pisa baptistery.

The Roman Tower of Pisa, consisting of 14,000 tons of white marble, was completed after quite an arduous 176 years. Because there is so much underground water in this area, Bonano was able to lay the foundation just above the ground. about 10 feet. When the first part of the tower was completed, the south side began to sink.

Builders tried to make it look better by building columns and arches on the south side an inch higher than those on the north side. However, by the time they got to the fourth part, they had to make the south poles 2 inches taller than the north pole. The tower continued to tilt, and because of objective difficulties, construction was stopped.

In 1234, the architect Benenato discovered that the tower was leaning even more. Now the south side of the fourth section is 6 inches shorter than the north side.

He added a fifth story, again making the southern columns taller than the northern ones. After adding this, Benenato gave up, and once again construction on the tower stopped.

Nearly thirty years later, in 1260, William of Innsbruck added a sixth and a seventh to the Tower of Pisa.

In 1350 Tommaso Pisano began work on the eighth part of the tower, the bell chamber. He saw that the tower was still slowly sinking, and so he made the spiral staircase inside the tower and the wall of the bell chamber higher on the south than on the north.

The tower was finally completed in 1372, almost 200 years after it was started, and it is still leaning.
