Currently, the square is where the statue of Scuola Normale di Pisa is located. Located in the forum of Portus Pisanus, the square is also known as the Piazza delle sette vie (The Square of the Seven Streets). It was the political center of the time and after 1140 saw the construction of many churches and buildings belonging to different cities and administrators.
In 1254, Popolo Pisano (People of Pisa), won, and from there the construction of the Palazzo del Popolo e degli Anziani (Palace of the People and the Old) began. This palace was built by joining buildings that were built before. The square is filled with buildings shrouded in rich culture and history. The Clock Palace was built in 1357, nearby was the home of the Capitano del Popolo (Captain of the People).
The southern part of the square is more commercial, with attorneys' offices, magistrates and other office buildings located here. Podestà residents can also be found here. In 1558, the buildings were rebuilt with Renaissance architecture and design. It was structured by architect Giorgio Vasari; who previously designed the masterpiece known as Cosimo l de' Medici.
In the years 1556 and 1569, Giorgio Vasari designed and built, with the help of other architects, two of the most fascinating buildings present in the square:
Church of the Knights of the Order of Saints and the Army of St. Stephen: this church was built on the foundation of the church of Saint Sebastian, which was previously located. The Renaissance style, in which the church was built, is so alluring that it captivates anyone who lays eyes on it.
Today, this place has become a cultural attraction for people from all over the world. Recently, in early 2013, the square was renovated, with the asphalt being replaced with sandstone, along with improved lighting so that tourists can enjoy their time even in the night. This place looks great at night and walking the streets will make you feel elated.
This place has a wonderful array of buildings with remarkable designs and structures for tourists to see. Be sure to visit the impressive Piazza dei Cavalieri .
