Giotto's bell tower

icon-locationPiazza del Duomo, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy
Many people consider the attractive Giotto to be connected to the Duomo however this is a separate building in its own right. This structure is a true masterpiece of Gothic architecture and one of the most famous designs in the city.

Giotto Bell Tower is the elegant bell tower of Florence Cathedral. It is considered one of the most beautiful spiers in Italy thanks to its harmonious colors and sculptural decoration. The tower is made of white, green and red marble, similar to the Cathedral.

Construction of the building began in 1334 and three years later the deceased architect Giotto di Bondone, did not live to see his work completed. After his death, the bell tower was completed by Andrea Pisano in 1359.

The lower floor of the tower is decorated with 54 reliefs and the top part of the tower has numerous rows of houses decorated with statues of saints and prophets. All the statues are replicas, but you can see the original in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.

The mobile bell tower has 414 steps leading to the highest point of the structure, but the way up is not tiring at all. Visitors will be amazed to be at the summit at 277 ft (84 m) and see one of the best panoramic vistas of Florence.

If you don't have much time to visit Florence and have to choose between the Cathedral bell tower and the dome, we recommend climbing to the latter and witnessing the masterpieces of Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari.
