Profile
Stretching for 288 km, the Aare is the longest river flowing exclusively in Switzerland. The Aare River has a special meaning to the people in the capital Bern and they have a special love for their beloved river. In the Middle Ages, when the city of Bern was spread only in the lower part of the peninsula, Aare was able to protect Bern from foreign armies attacking from three sides of the city. It was only when tall bridges were built in the early 19th century that there were many ways to access Bern.
On hot summer days, locals will find every excuse to hop off Aare and relax to enjoy their beautiful cityscape. In fact, swimming in the Aare River is an official activity on Switzerland's list of UNESCO traditions. It is part of the authentic Bern experience, even for visitors to the city.
Follow the water on a relaxing stroll along the Aare, and breathe in the city atmosphere, you'll meet locals who also go for a walk or swim, and with every step you'll understand understand why Bern residents love the Aare river so much.
