Japanese cuisine has gained worldwide popularity in recent years, and Japanese sake has similarly gained international recognition. One sake brewery has been operating in Otaru for about 120 years: Tanaka Kikkogura Sake Brewery. In recent years, it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination with foreign visitors.

Tanaka Kikkogura Sake Brewery is housed in a wooden-framed stone warehouse built around 1905, unlike other breweries, it can brew sake throughout the year due to its cooler climate. Hokkaido's year-round freshness, which you can observe first-hand during the tour.

The most essential ingredient in sake making is water, Tanaka brewery uses groundwater flowing from Otaru Tenguyama, pumped up from a depth of 70 meters, you can drink it at the brewery between spring and autumn .

This is a local winery that operates year-round, using 100% Hokkaido-produced rice. Visitors can tour the factory at any time as sake production takes place daily.

More specifically, you can enjoy free sake, taste “Takaragawa”, a refined local sake representing Otaru City, famous throughout Japan. There are also other branded products with limited and seasonal versions, take the time to sample some of the products to choose which one you want to buy as a souvenir.
