While it may seem like a somewhat grim visit, the Monumental Cemetery is a veritable open-air museum, with a large number of graves of significant artistic value.

The huge cemetery Cimitero Monumentale is extremely famous for its numerous beautifully decorated tombs. The mausoleums are so lavish and original that it is considered by many to be an open-air museum with authentic "works of art" from the nineteenth century to the present day.

The cemetery was founded in 1866 to unify a number of small and unsanitary cemeteries distributed in Milan.

An open-air museum

Covering an area of over 250,000 square meters, the cemetery has a large collection of Italian sculptures, Greek temples, memorials and even a small version of Trajan's Column.

As soon as you step through the main gate, you will see a kind of "Hall of Fame" where hundreds of architects, athletes, actors, journalists, musicians and many others are buried.

Some of the most impressive (and not to be missed) tombs include a sculptural white tower representing the life and death of Christ, belonging to the Bernocchi family, an eerie pyramid built for the Bruni family and some sculptures representing the Last Supper Authorized by the Campari family.

It is the second largest cemetery in Milan and has a Jewish section and other graves of non-Catholic families.

To the left of the main entrance is a photography exhibition showing the development of the cemetery. When you reach the end of the exhibit, you'll come across two electric fireplaces built in the 1920s.

The Monumental Cemetery is one of the most impressive attractions in Milan. Far from the typical sombre cemetery, it's a place filled with remarkable sculptures and artworks of all shapes and sizes.

At the main entrance, visitors can find a map of the cemetery with the most impressive graves marked on it. It is definitely worth getting one to make sure you see all the beautiful mausoleums.
