1. Introduction
“August for father’s death anniversary, March for mother’s” is a Vietnamese folk saying reminding descendants to remember their parents’ memorial days. Here, “father” refers to Saint Trần Hưng Đạo – one of Vietnam’s greatest generals, recognized among the world’s top ten military strategists. His real name was Trần Quốc Tuấn, who led Đại Việt’s army to defeat the mighty Mongol invaders and safeguard national independence.
Every year, Trần Hưng Đạo’s memorial day falls on the 20th day of the eighth lunar month, celebrated across Vietnam wherever there is a Trần Hưng Đạo temple.
