Profile
Locals love Powai Lake as a place to watch the sunset or hang out in the evening. It will also be a memorable experience for visitors in Mumbai.
The lake is the result of two dams built on the Mithi River in 1891. The purpose is to create a reservoir to supply water in Mumbai. However, the water quality deteriorated within a few years, and it was declared unfit for drinking.
Powai Lake then came under the control of the West Indian Fishing Association, to develop fishing and fishing operations. The Maharashtra State Fishing Association (MSAA), since 1936, takes care of the lake to clean and rejuvenate it. The IIT Mumbai group in 1980 also took the initiative to restore the natural beauty of the lake. Then, in 2002, Brihanmumbai City Corporation (BMC) implemented a plan to revive and rehabilitate the lake.
The area around Powai Lake is lined with trees and flowering balsam bushes that attract a lot of bees and butterflies. Many species of birds also visit this serene lake such as kingfishers, spotted ducks and pigeons being some of them. On some days, visitors can also spot other birds in Powai Lake such as storks, herons and falcons. The lake also has plenty of fish and a few crocodiles but it's really rare to see crocodiles. In addition to soaking up the lake scenery, you can relax and enjoy the city life in the garden next to the lake
Apart from the beaches and promenade facing the sea, this is the only place to experience the golden color of the sunset sky in Mumbai. Visitors can also take a walk in Nirvana Park. Nirvana Park is a charming park across the street across from Lake Powai, within the Hiranandani complex. Lawns, ponds and children playing by the slide are some of the first things you see when you walk in. From wooden walkways, Asian-style lanterns, small flowers, tall trees to dense shrubs, everything blends into the soothing atmosphere of Nirvana Park .
