Opened in 1907, this is said to be the oldest jazz club in the United States.
Green Mill has quite an interesting history. When it opened in 1907, it was called Pop Morse's Gardens, named after the owner at the time. Three years later, Tom Chamalas bought the shop, and renamed it Green Mill Gardens, inspired by the Moulin Rouge (meaning Red Mill in English) of Paris. During the Prohibition period in the US (1920-1933), the bar was famous as a favorite hangout for the notorious mafia group Al Capone. The shop also had many famous Jazz artists to perform such as Billie Holiday, Tommy Dorsey, Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson, Benny Goodman...
Today, although it has been changed owners, but Green Mill still retains its musical tradition. Live music is performed every night, starting with the opening act, going to the main performer of the night, and ending with a jazz improvisation. Some nights of the week will have certain themes, like Thursday night being "Night of the Big Bangs" with Swing Shift music and Lindy Hop dancing. Modern jazz artists who have performed here include John Bany, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Michael Jones and Chris Foreman.
At Green Mill there is no water menu, guests can order whatever they want. Traditional cocktails and beer are served.
Note : Green Mill accepts cash only. Depending on the day, the entrance fee ranges from $4 - $15
