Buckingham Palace is Britain's most famous residence, the luxurious residence and workplace of Queen Elizabeth II. Officially part of the British royal family since 1837, Buckingham Palace is considered the center of the British constitutional monarchy. The walls of the palace have witnessed countless major decisions of this great kingdom, lavish, flashy parties and even formal ceremonies welcoming foreign dignitaries.
Originally built as the Buckingham home for the Duke of Buckingham in 1705, the palace has been enlarged over the centuries. Today, it is one of the most visited places in the world.
Stepping through the threshold of Buckingham Palace, entering the Great Hall, visitors will admire the flawless beauty of the Public Stairs, which are made of sophisticated marble, attached to which are portraits of St. Queen Victoria hanging on the wall. The lampposts are accented with gold and powerful red, and the Throne Room is used as a meeting and reception area for the royal family. This is the room leading to the East Balcony, where Prince William and Duchess Catherine Middleton kissed in front of the world during their wedding in April 2011.
While not an art gallery or museum, the palace's private art collection is comparable to many national collections. Explore handcrafted furniture for kings and heirloom works of art from masters like Rembrandt.
The palace has more than 700 rooms. In August and September, when Queen Elizabeth II makes her annual visit to Scotland, 19 stunning National Rooms are open to visitors. These galleries are filled with works of art from the famous private collection of the royal family.
And, as a quote, if the royal flag is flying over the palace, the Queen has returned. Would you like to come see it? Queen of a country where the sun never sets.
