Historical Event

In 1784, Nguyen Hue chose the stretch of the Tien River from Rach Gam to Xoai Mut—a strategic location with the densely forested Thoi Son Island—to lay an ambush in preparation for an attack by the Siamese forces. The army enemy, led by Chieu Tang and Chieu Suong, numbered 50,000 troops.

On the night of January 19 and the early morning of January 20, 1785, as the Siamese forces entered the battle area, the Tay Son army launched a surprise attack, sinking nearly the entire Siamese fleet. The result was a decisive defeat for the Siamese, with most of their forces destroyed and only a few thousand escaping, including Nguyen Anh, who fled to Siam. The Rach Gam – Xoai Mut victory became a defining moment in Vietnamese history, one of the largest naval battles and a symbol of the resistance against foreign invaders by the people of the Central South.

To honor this historic victory, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism designated the site as a National Historical Site in 1992, and in 2014 it was recognized as a Special National Historical Site.

Nguyen Hue National Hero Monument

At the heart of the historical site stands a 20-ton bronze statue of Nguyen Hue, 8 meters tall, placed on a pedestal shaped like a warship. The hero is depicted in a majestic pose, drawing his sword, with a soldier beside him raising a bow, and a civilian rowing a boat, symbolizing unity and strength.
