Đạo Dừa (Coconut Religion) is a unique religious sect founded by Nguyễn Thành Nam in 1963 on Cồn Phụng, Bến Tre. Emerging during a time of war and turmoil in Vietnam, Đạo Dừa offered a hopeful vision of peace, compassion, and the harmony of diverse beliefs. The doctrine of Đạo Dừa is distinctive, combining elements of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and a special reverence for the coconut tree, a symbol of the Bến Tre region.

The Founding of Đạo Dừa

Nguyễn Thành Nam, the founder of Đạo Dừa, was born in Phước Thạnh commune, Trúc Giang district, Kiến Hòa province (now Châu Thành district, Bến Tre). After studying in France, he began to reflect deeply on religion and architecture, which led him to form the idea for a new religion. Upon returning to his hometown and establishing a family, Nam decided to become a monk and chose Cồn Phụng as the birthplace of Đạo Dừa in 1963.

The Đạo Dừa relic site on Cồn Phụng is not only a place of worship but also an impressive architectural work of art that attracts visitors from all over. Some notable landmarks in the site include:

- Cửu Trùng Đài Tower: This is where Nguyễn Thành Nam used to preach to his followers. The tower features a unique architectural style influenced by Eastern religious schools, with symbolic details that represent the connection between heaven and earth.
- Nine Dragons Courtyard (Sân 9 Rồng): Located in the center of the relic site, this courtyard features nine large columns, each carved with the image of a dragon. This is where Đạo Dừa followers perform rituals. The dragon courtyard is surrounded by towers, models of mountains, and caves, creating a mystical and sacred atmosphere.
