Thung Khe Pass (White Stone Pass)

Thung Khe Pass belongs to Highway 6, located between Tan Lac and Mai Chau districts of Hoa Binh province. The pass has a very beautiful edge but is also very dangerous due to the steep slope, steep cliffs and many bends. It is also known as the white stone pass because the limestone drifted downwards during construction, so part of the current pass is completely white. The white part is also close to the top of the pass.

Thung Khe Pass is located at an altitude of 1000m above sea level, so the weather is often very cold and sometimes a dense fog restricts visibility. You will find here some small shacks, with thatched roofs, a few sets of tables and chairs and hot teapots ready to serve passing guests. These shops are located close to the cliff and this place is also known as Thung Khe market. Buses from Hanoi often stop here to rest, eat something and enjoy the view. The dishes are also very typical you can try such as Lam Lam rice with sesame salt, buffalo meat in the kitchen, grilled corn, boiled eggs...

The main reason for guests to stop here is because of the beautiful scenery. If you ride a motorbike, you can easily feel the wonderful natural atmosphere here. Thung Khe Pass is known for its dramatic day-to-day weather changes, which locals liken to the seasons of the year. The morning is cool, the early morning mist is fuzzy, the afternoon brings the autumn wind but also has the warmth of the clear summer sun, the evening will be cold and foggy like in winter.

Going a little further, you will meet Thung Khe Pass Flagpole, also known as Mai Chau flagpole or Mai Chau scenic spot, this is probably the highlight of the whole pass. From here, you have a great view of Mai Chau valley, many photos of Mai Chau have been taken by tourists as well as photographers from this location. You can rest here and enjoy the beautiful view of the valley.
