Profile
Construction of the Colosseum began under Emperor Vespasian around 70-72, and was completed in 80 under Titus. The work was continuously adjusted during the reign of King Domitian. After the great fire of Rome in AD 64, the site for the construction of the arena was abandoned and was commissioned by Emperor Nero to build the Domus Aurea on this site. After many years of construction and collapse due to earthquakes and wars, more or less changes were made and formed a Colosseum as it is today. Dating back more than 2000 years, the Colosseum deserves its title of "Witness to History".
The Colosseum was originally designed to hold 50,000 people. Later, the architects expanded the design, increasing the capacity of this building up to 55,000 people. The main use of the arena is as a place for martial artists to fight. It is estimated that more than 500,000 people and more than 1 million animals died while participating in bloody life-and-death games in the Colosseum to entertain people during this work.
It is also used for public performances, mock exercises at sea, hunting animals, classical plays. Many festivals held in the Colosseum lasted up to 100 days. The Romans sometimes flooded the Colosseum to make it the site of exciting naval battles to entertain everyone. This structure gradually ceased to be used as a place of entertainment in the Middle Ages. Later, the arena was used as a house, shop, religion, fortress...
