Flora Fountain is one of the popular tourist attractions inside the Churchgate area in the heart of South Mumbai. Tourists coming to Mumbai will definitely want to explore this monument because of its beautiful construction, verdant gardens and “Fountain Lights” show in the evening.

Inscribed on the World Heritage List, this memorial was built by the Agricultural Society of West India. The fountain was designed by R. Norman Shaw, it has a mix of Neo-Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles and was built in 1864, by Engineer James Forsythe.

The Flora Fountain was originally named after the Governor of Bombay, Sir Bartle Frere, but shortly before the fountain opened in 1864, the name 'Flora' was given to it, after the Roman Goddess. In 1960, the fountain was known as Martyrs Square, or Hutatma Chowk, with its impressive stone statue carrying a pair of torches held in the hands of patriots, to honor 105 members of the Samyuktha Maharashtra Samiti who lost their lives in while fighting for a separate Maharashtrian state.

The stone structure is intricately carved and sculpted. Its four corners are decorated with various statues. The water tank below has the shape of a stone fish and a lion's head. A beautiful 2.1m tall statue of the Roman Goddess Flora adorns the top of the fountain.
