Profile
Beylerbeyi Palace and the surrounding area - known as the Garden of the Cross, is an area of various structures since the Byzantine Period. The kings built many houses for the people and pavilions on the royal estate here, and in 1829, Sultan Mahmud II built a small wooden palace located right by the river.
During the 19th century, the fortified palace building was built by order of Sultan Mahmut II. Later, the building was damaged due to a large fire and Sultan Abdülaziz had the building completely demolished and rebuilt. From circa 1863-65, the main building of the palace took on its present appearance with an area of 3000 square meters including the main building and additional buildings.
Today, the main structure of the Palace including the Mabeyn and Harem sections is open to visitors. The seafront pavilions, the historic tunnel connecting Usküdar and Beylerbeyi, the Yellow Pavilion, Marble Pavilion and Barn Stables are also used for different purposes.
Beylerbeyi Palace, along with Dolmabahce Palace, is one of the notable palaces with typical Istanbul decoration. Its interior architecture, details and exteriors, are a perfect amalgamation of Neoclassical, Baroque and Renaissance art styles.
The palace has three entrances, six large rooms and 26 smaller rooms. The interior is decorated in white marble with two main floors and a basement with kitchen and storage rooms.
The floor was covered with sedge carpets imported from Egypt as well as large carpets weighing several kilograms. Attractive furnishings include Bohemian crystal chandeliers, French clocks and Yıldız porcelain vases from China, Japan, France and Turkey.
Beylerbeyi Palace has lovely terraced gardens on the steep hillside behind which sets it apart from other Ottoman palaces of the same period. You'll find two booths here, the yellow gallery by the pool and the marble gallery with its pretty fountain and marble walls.
The palace's elegant architecture attracts guests with its historic gardens and splendor spread over an area of 70,000 square meters. The beautiful gardens are home to rare plants. The gardens are connected by stairs and ramps.
