Profile
Delhi Zoo opened in 1959, renamed Delhi National Animal Park in 1982. Located near India Gate in the heart of New Delhi, the zoo spans over 170 acres and is home to nearly 130 species of animals and birds from all over the world.
At the Animal Park, birds and animals live in an environment that resembles their natural habitat in many ways. Zoos not only provide a home for endangered species, but also help them breed in captivity with the ultimate aim of releasing them so they can thrive again in the wild. The Animal Park also organizes conservation breeding programs for Asiatic lions, royal Bengal tigers, giraffes, swamp deer, Indian rhinoceros, and red jungle fowl.
Visitors can explore this animal park on foot or using the zoo's tram. Going to the right from the entrance will bring you to animal enclosures including chimpanzees, hippos, spider monkeys, African buffalo, giraffes, Gir lions and zebras. Heading to the left you'll find animals including migratory birds like peacocks, as well as hyenas, monkeys and jaguars in marshes designed for waterfowl. In the center of the zoo is the underground reptile house.
The zoo also has a library, which houses a collection of wildlife books and provides information on the zoo's history. Visitors are not allowed to bring any food other than drinking water on the premises.
