A Long History and Unique Architecture

Founded by the Most Venerable Giac Nguyen in the mid-18th century, Tien Chau Pagoda originally began as a small hermitage called Bai Tien. After the passing of the Most Venerable Giac Nguyen, the pagoda was expanded with donations from the nun Dieu Thien. In 1858, the Most Venerable Hoang Duc Hoi, of the Lam Te lineage, continued to enlarge the pagoda and officially named it Tien Chau Di Da Tu.

The pagoda’s architecture is designed in the traditional “tam” (三) layout, consisting of the main hall, the rear altar, and the priest’s living quarters. The structure is primarily made from valuable wood, such as Xylia Xylocarpa and redwood, with intricately carved details by skilled artisans from Hue. In 1899, the pagoda underwent a major renovation, which added four halls: an expanded front hall, main hall, central hall, and rear altar, all strengthened with a traditional yin-yang tiled roof and reinforced walls.

Over the years, the pagoda suffered damage due to wars but has been restored multiple times, including in 1945, 1968, and most recently in 2009. As a result, the pagoda still preserves its original charm, reflecting the architectural style of the 19th century.

Given its historical and spiritual significance, on December 12, 1994, Tien Chau Pagoda was recognized as a National Historical-Cultural Site by the authorities.

The Pagoda’s Sacred Interior

Inside the pagoda, you will find a large clay statue of Amitabha Buddha surrounded by altars, including the statues of the Three Worlds, Shakyamuni, Maitreya, and other deities, creating a deeply sacred atmosphere. The interior is delicately decorated with couplets inscribed on the altars: "The Buddha's light shines bright through the ages, the Dharma wheel turns, changing all paths."

The central hall and the ancestral hall are dedicated to honoring past monks and the devout men and women who have passed away. This area also serves as a place to welcome guests and features numerous paintings and meaningful couplets promoting goodness and virtue.

"Tien Chau stretches before Vinh Long town,
Here lively crowds stand, yet all is still.
