Sofia's first shopping center was built in the Neo-Renaissance style

Sofia City Center Market is located on Marie Louise Avenue - one of the busiest central avenues in the city. The construction of the market was actually started when a design by the Bulgarian architect - Naum Torbov was selected in 1907 and it took 2 years to complete the market with an area of 3,200 square meters. The Central Market was opened and officially put into operation in 1911 and since that time until now, this place has always been an important commercial center in the city of Sofia.

Initially, the market was built with 4 entrances and 3 floors, however, today there are only 3 entrances. The design of the market is considered one of the greatest works of architect Naum Torbov. The Neo-Renaissance style was used, and today, visitors can still see clear highlights of that style through the sculptures right on the facade of the building. Besides, if you pay close attention, you can also see the reliefs of the city coat of arms of Sofia on the entrance to the main gate created by artist Haralampi Tachev and the famous three-dial clock tower at the top. From 1911 to 1940, the Central Market was under the management of the Sofia Metropolitan Government.

By the end of 1940, the municipality of Sofia Central Market had 170 shops and stalls. From 1950 onwards, the interior of the market has undergone significant changes and until 1988, the market was closed for reconstruction. Finally, on Easter 2000, a more modern market opened. Also at this time, more than 75% of the Central Market was acquired by an Israeli company and that is why the fountain in the center of the ground floor has an iconic image for Israel.

Today, the number of employees working at the Central Market has reached more than 1000, serving all the dining and shopping needs of visitors. On the ground floor are stalls selling food such as bread and pastries, olives, nuts and candies and rose oil products, etc. The upper floors are shops for clothing, accessories and jewelry. When shopping and dining here, visitors can rest assured because the price and quality of products are strictly regulated and controlled.
