In the heart of Innsbruck's historic district you can find the world famous Golden Roof, the symbol of the city. Emperor Maximilian I (1459 - 1519) built a post-Gothic golden-roofed balcony on the occasion of his wedding around 1500 AD to dispel rumors concerning his financial difficulties. Kingdom. The balcony is 16 m wide and the roof is 3.7 m high and is paved with 2,657 gilded bronze tiles and a few pure gold ones. Below the edge of the roof you can see reliefs depicting emperor Maximilian I with his two wives Mary of Burgundy and Bianca Maria Sforza with Morris' dancers. Did you know that the original bricks were replaced by replicas in the 20th century? Today, six of the original bricks can be admired in the Golden Roof Museum.
The museum has been completely reconstructed for the 500th anniversary of Maximilian I's death and reopened in February 2019. It houses contemporary exhibitions and interesting texts on the life of Maximilian I. Emperor.
