Profile
The Lalbaug Spice Market consists of rows of stalls selling a variety of aromatic spices. The combination of many aromas from different spices gives the market a distinct atmosphere that is hard to forget. The scent also combines with the vivid colors of spices to create a very impressive scene.
The road leading to the market is a bit difficult to find at first, but if you pay attention, you can immediately recognize it by the sacks full of red peppers lined up. Meanwhile, vendors sat in the shade of brick-and-mortar shops and hand-painted signs, busily filling jars and weighing powders, luring customers with their fragrant scents and competitive prices.
Guests can choose to buy their own fresh and seasonal spices or they can grind them at facilities that specialize in grinding and roasting spices according to each customer's request using large metal grinders. For those who prefer to buy off-the-shelf, the stores offer their own, selection of colorful spice blends, each labeled in Hindi with the name, date they were milled and packaged.
In addition to spices, the area also has a bustling vegetable market, a market called Chivda Galli and a busy fish market. Another popular item sold in this market is desiccated copra. The coconut tree is abundant in the coastal regions of Maharashtra, so it is used in both fresh and dried form. Copra is ground together with garlic and red pepper to make lasun chili sauce, a favorite dish of the locals.
