Profile
Located in South Mumbai, Chor Bazaar literally translates to Thieves' Market. One of the oldest markets in Mumbai, which has a fascinating history with more than 150 years. Originally, Chor Bazaar was known as 'Shor Bazaar', which means 'Noisy Market'. However, the British, during their reign in India, mispronounced the word and eventually the market became known as 'Chor Bazaar'.
Chor Bazaar has a history of more than 150 years, Chor Bazaar is home to many stolen goods, as the name suggests it was a favorite place for the British during their reign in India. They often buy cheap watches, furniture, bronzes and other household items. These markets are considered to be the only places in Mumbai that sell goods at such unusual prices.
As one of the most attractive markets, visitors will often find shopaholics rummaging through goods at sky-high prices. From antiques to Victorian furniture and fashion to electronics, the range of items available here is astounding. If you are good at haggling, then this might be the place for you.
Upon arrival at Chor Bazaar, you will find yourself surrounded by Islamic architectural buildings and surroundings. Located on Mutton Street, the area is packed with dilapidated buildings, busy streets and dilapidated shops, still retaining a bit of its old-world charm. Most of the streets are packed with vendors selling all kinds of goods at very soft prices.
The popularity of Chor Bazaar has grown more and more over the years. Several Bollywood movies have been shot in the alleys of this narrow street. Mini Market and Juma Market in Chor Bazaar are two subdivisions of this popular market. At the Mini Market, tourists can find posters and all sorts of other trinkets related to the Bollywood industry. At Juma Market you can find a wide variety of hardware, tools and furniture. Chor Bazaar was also mentioned in a famous novel by Rohinton Mistry, entitled “Such a long journey”.
