Sea Life London Aquarium

Sea Life London, situated on the South Bank of the River Thames, has undergone a fascinating evolution since its inception. In 2005, the aquarium showcased innovation by displaying three robotic fish developed by the computer science department at the University of Essex. These autonomous fish, designed to emulate the speed of tuna, acceleration of a pike, and the navigating skills of an eel, added a futuristic touch to the aquarium's offerings.
Undergoing a significant transformation in April 2008, Sea Life London was acquired by Merlin Entertainments, marking a new era for the aquatic attraction. The acquisition was followed by a substantial £5 million refurbishment, culminating in the grand reopening in April 2009 as a Sea Life Centre. This refurbishment brought forth notable additions, including a revamped Pacific Ocean tank, a new underwater tunnel, and the introduction of the thrilling Shark Walk.
Architect Kay Elliott oversaw the entire refurbishment process, ensuring that the additions seamlessly integrated into the existing layout. The underwater tunnel, a hallmark of Sea Life London, allowed visitors to traverse through an immersive aquatic environment surrounded by marine life, creating a unique and enchanting experience. The introduction of the Shark Walk elevated the thrill factor, providing a vantage point above the Pacific Ocean tank where visitors could walk amidst the fascinating world of sharks.
In May 2011, Sea Life London further expanded its offerings with the introduction of a new penguin exhibit. Ten gentoo penguins, originally from the Edinburgh Zoo, found their new home in the heart of London. This addition not only enhanced the diversity of marine life on display but also provided an opportunity for visitors to observe and appreciate the playful antics of these charming birds.
However, the aquarium's journey didn't end with these enhancements. In 2015, Sea Life London underwent a relocation to a different location in County Hall. This move was prompted by the opening of Shrek's Adventure, London, and it allowed Sea Life London to continue captivating audiences in a fresh and vibrant setting.
