Opened by Queen Sofía in 1986, Centro de Arte de Reina Sofía is Madrid's pioneering center for contemporary art. The sleek modern building was created by architect Antonio Fernández Alba and has features reminiscent of the Center Pompidou in Paris, especially the three glass towers with elevators on the outside of the building. . A great surprise for visitors is the charming courtyard garden filled with imaginative sculptures. In a thorough presentation of contemporary Spanish art, the collection includes notable masterpieces such as works by Juan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The artworks are displayed in different rooms spread over the 39,000 square meter exhibition space. The museum also has a bookstore, cafeteria and restaurant.
