Profile
The museum is named after Émile Guimet – an industrialist from Lyon with a profound passion for Eastern cultures. In the late 19th century, he personally undertook numerous journeys to collect Asian art artifacts and bring them back to Paris.
Émile Guimet traveled to China, Japan, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Himalayan region. These expeditions brought back Buddha statues, stone sculptures, ancient religious manuscripts, ceramics, silk paintings, and many other invaluable artifacts.
The museum is organized by cultural regions, guiding visitors through India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, and Vietnam. Each gallery reflects the distinctive identity of its respective civilization. Musée national des arts asiatiques - guimet also serves as a cultural hub, hosting thematic exhibitions, concerts, seminars, and art events inspired by Asian traditions.
Guimet fosters a dialogue between civilizations through its open display concept, harmonious lighting, and refined layout, allowing visitors to feel as though they are embarking on a journey through time.
The museum is open from Wednesday to Monday, 10:00–18:00; closed on Tuesdays and major public holidays. Adult admission: 11.50 EUR; free entry for visitors under 18 and certain eligible groups.
Address: 6 Place d’Iéna, 16th arrondissement, Paris. Take Metro Line 9 to Iéna station; or enjoy a short walk from the Champs-Élysées.
Guimet offers a “miniature Asia” in the heart of Paris. From Indian Buddha statues and Angkor art to Vietnamese Chu Dau ceramics and Japanese silk paintings, every piece contributes to a vibrant portrait of Eastern civilization.
A single visit to Guimet reveals that Paris is not only about the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, but also home to a captivating treasure trove of Asian culture.
