Profile
The National Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), in district 4, has more than 60,000 works of art from 1905 to the present. It houses one of Europe's most important collections of modern masterpieces, embodying the artistic movements of Fauvism, cubism, surrealism and abstract expression.
The location of the museum also attracts visitors: inside the architecturally charming Center Pompidou, right on Place Beaubourg, in the neighborhood of the same name. In this popular square there are regular pantomime performances, music and other free entertainment.
In contrast to the classic stone facade of the Louvre, the Center Pompidou, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rodgers, is a postmodern construction made of steel and glass. The building also met with initial criticism when it was inaugurated in 1977. Parisians were not at all impressed with the building's industrial, "upside down" look. Building amenities, such as elevators, plumbing, and air conditioning, are color-coded and placed outside the building to increase interior space. Today, the Center Pompidou is a symbol of this cultural center's readiness to embrace the new.
The library occupies the first three floors of Center Pompidou and MOMA exhibits are located on the fourth and fifth floors. Head to the fifth floor to admire works from 1905 to 1965 (modern times), with artists such as Matisse, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Picasso and Pollock. On the fourth floor, visitors will find many masterpieces from the mid-60s to the present (contemporary). Temporary exhibitions, about 30 exhibitions a year, are an important part of the museum's schedule. Only about 850 masterpieces in the permanent collection are on display, and they rotate every six months.
The jewels in the permanent collection include 65 works by Picasso, making MOMA an ideal alternative—or accompanying tour—to the Picasso National Museum, also in Paris. It also houses many of Man Ray's exposure prints and film negatives, many of which have never been released before, taken by the legendary photographer.
Along with a dedicated exhibition space for children, the Center Pompidou also houses a public library and IRCAM, a center for music and vocal studies, a cinema, several performance rooms and panoramic views of the city. street view from the sixth floor.
The National Museum of Modern Art is located near bus, train and subway stations. Visitors do not have to buy tickets to see the permanent exhibitions, but there is a small fee for temporary exhibitions. There is a bookstore and a cafe that serves a variety of snacks.
