Sam Son, located about 17km east of Thanh Hoa city and 170km south of Hanoi, has been a famous tourist destination since the early 20th century. The beach stretches nearly 6km, from the foot of Truong Le Mountain to the Lach Hoi estuary. In 1906, the French considered Sam Son “the most ideal resort in Indochina” due to its gentle slopes, saline water, and moderate waves. Since 1907, Sam Son has been developed to serve French officials and members of the Nguyen Dynasty. With fine white sands, no reefs, and safe swimming conditions, the beach quickly became a popular destination, drawing visitors from across the country. Sam Son was officially established as a town in 1981, and in 2007, celebrated its “100 Years of Tourism.” Sam Son Beach transforms throughout the day. In the early morning, local fishermen return from a night at sea, filling the beach with bustling seafood markets. As the sun rises, the beach shimmers under the sunlight. In the cool afternoon, it becomes crowded with bathers. At night, the beach lies tranquil under the moonlight, while Ho Xuan Huong Street remains lively and illuminated. To the south of the Truong Le Mountain range lies Tien Beach, an unspoiled area with pristine scenery that promises to become an attractive resort in the future. To the north, visitors can explore Van Chai eco-tourism area, where they can experience the authentic life of Vietnamese fishermen by joining net-pulling activities, sunbathing, or enjoying a barbecue on the beach. Cyclo tours along the coast also provide a delightful way to explore Sam Son, with friendly drivers eager to introduce the town’s attractions. Beyond its beautiful beaches, Sam Son boasts a range of famous landmarks. The Truong Le Mountain range, steeped in legend, tells the story of a fairy who transformed herself to protect the villagers. Then, there is Trong Mai Rock, symbolizing undying love, and Doc Cuoc Temple, which honors a one-legged god who split himself in two to guard both land and sea. Visitors can also find Co Tien Temple, dedicated to the Doc Cuoc god and Holy Mother Lieu Hanh, and Vong Hai Dai, a scenic lookout offering expansive views over the ocean. Visitors to Sam Son can also enjoy a wide array of fresh, high-quality seafood, including squid, shrimp, crab, and fish varieties such as pompano, mackerel, and sardines. Noteworthy dishes include fish salad and sea snake hotpot. Freshly caught fish is marinated with local spices for a delicious, authentic taste, while the sea snake, said to relieve back pain, is prepared in a unique hotpot. Sam Son is not only a place to embrace nature’s beauty but also a land rich in folklore, with annual festivals such as Doc Cuoc Temple Festival, An Duong Vuong Festival, and Khai Minh Pagoda Festival. Every moment spent in Sam Son leaves an unforgettable impression on visitors who have had the chance to experience it. Nature has truly blessed Thanh Hoa with this extraordinary coastal retreat, where people and landscapes merge to create a unique and memorable destination.
