Profile
Construction of the Hofburg Imperial Palace began in 1275, a year before the Hapsburg clan overthrew King Ottokar II of Bohemia and came to power. The remaining structure is from 1533 onwards, as generations of the Hapsburg family built more. The palace now consists of 18 wings and more than 2,000 rooms.
Enter through the entrance gate and ornate baroque courtyard called Michaelerplatz and turn right as you enter the wide courtyard. Visit the nearby Royal Apartments and see how the Hapsburg family built this splendid palace as their residence. Admire the original interiors, lavish decorations and artifacts.
Learn about the life of one of the dynasty's most famous empresses in the Sisi Museum with hundreds of artifacts related to Elisabeth, Franz Josef I's assassinated young wife. Find the secret passage to the Gallery Showcase the spectacular Prunksaal in the National Library. See masterpieces from the Gothic period to the present day in the exquisite Albertina Museum.
Listen to a performance by the Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys' Choir) in the Imperial Cathedral or dazzle at its collection of crowns, jewelry and other antiques, including unicorn horns, in Schatzkammer (Treasure) Museum. The Silver Collection still holds many of the artifacts that were left to the Austrian Republic when the Hapsburg monarchy ended in 1918. Watch a show at the ornate Winter Riding School to see Witness an impressive horseback riding performance.
There are so many shows at this palace complex that visitors will have to come back another day to see them all.
