Da Lat Train Station

Located in Ward 10 of Da Lat city, Lam Dong province, Da Lat Train Station is one of the most prominent cultural and historical symbols of the city. Built between 1932 and 1938, it serves as the central station for the Thap Cham – Da Lat railway line, which stretches 84 km. This remarkable structure not only showcases unique architectural value but also holds many fascinating historical stories.

Distinctive Architecture

Designed by French architects Moncet and Reveron, Da Lat Train Station features a distinctive style that vividly reflects the local cultural identity. The elegant and coherent structure has a symmetrical layout, with the central section mimicking the three peaks of Langbiang Mountain and traditional longhouses of the Central Highlands.

Notably, at the center beneath the roof, a large clock marks the time when Dr. Alexandre Yersin discovered Da Lat, symbolizing the connection between history and the present.

Historical Background

The project to construct the Thap Cham - Da Lat railway was approved by Governor Paul Doumer and commenced from 1908 to 1922. The Asian contractor was responsible for the Swiss-style cogwheel section from Kroongpha to Dran, approximately 10 km long, which ascended the steep Sông Pha Pass at a 12% gradient. At that time, cogwheel railways and engines were only found in Switzerland and Vietnam.

Once Da Lat Train Station was completed, tourist numbers surged. Each train consisted of three passenger cars, divided into three classes.

After the French departure from Vietnam, the railway continued to operate. During the era of the Vietnam Republic, it primarily served to transport equipment for the war. However, due to intense conflict, the line ceased operations in 1972.

After the liberation, the railway was restored and officially resumed operations on May 19, 1975, coinciding with the celebration of President Ho Chi Minh’s birthday.

Current Operations

Today, Da Lat Train Station no longer functions as a major train station but has become an attractive tourist destination. The only remaining operational line is the Da Lat – Trai Mat route, which is 7 km long and takes visitors to Trai Mat and Linh Phuoc Pagoda, known for its unique architecture. The train runs at a slow pace, allowing passengers to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountainous region, immersing themselves in the peaceful atmosphere and freely exploring the natural beauty around them.

National Historical and Cultural Site

In 2001, Da Lat Train Station was recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Site, affirming the cultural and historical significance of the structure. It is not only one of the oldest and most unique train stations in Southeast Asia but also a symbol of the city of pines, enriching the travel experience for visitors to Da Lat.
