En is a restaurant for those who want to eat at a place where locals usually eat. With a cozy wooden interior, this place is suitable for intimate and respectful dinners.

En serves all the familiar izakaya staples and then a few. Grilled fish, miso cod, Japanese omelette roll, spinach with sesame sauce, grilled beef steak, grilled stingray fin, soba, udon, some rice dishes. At En, there's something for everyone.

There is an English menu with pictures of the dishes to choose from

Usually, Japanese people will start ordering with some snacks. Otsumami are fun, savory dishes that you eat less to get rid of alcohol. For example, you can try shrimp and miso namerou - small pieces of raw shrimp sautéed with chewy sweet and salty barley miso. Alternate chopstick-sized spoons with sake or beer. It's a good way to start a dinner like a local

There is a very good grilled pork dish here. Thoroughly cooked pork with the right proportion of lean and fat is a chef's own skill. Marinating the meat in miso and sake residues - leftovers from the sake making process - bring out the unique delicious taste of this local barbecue, which can cause problems or frustrations. Yours vanishes quickly.

The takana and jako fried rice is also unique here and it is served with pickled cabbage and sardines for a delicious flavor combination.

For a more balanced meal, you can try shrimp and eggplant in a traditional Japanese dashi broth for the perfect counterpoint to the meat and wine dishes that have kept you hooked.

It's a good idea to make a reservation here - or better yet, just drop by with a friend or two, as this is the kind of restaurant that's big enough to accommodate most guests on foot. Don't expect a quick dinner here. Dishes take a while to get out of the kitchen and you'll find yourself eating at a leisurely pace.

When you wander in Shinjuju area and bewildered with a difficult question that has no exact answer: what to eat and where to eat. So let's make it easy: come to En.
