During the French colonial period, when mapping, there were many islands and caves that the French put their way, but for Trinh Nu cave, they named it based on the legend of the fishermen, so the cave called La vierge (translated into Vietnamese as "The Girl's Cave").
The name of Trinh Nu cave begins from a story about the iron heart, the faithful love of a couple. The story goes that, in the past, on Ha Long Bay, there was a very beautiful girl from a fishing village, but her family was poor and had to work for landowners in the area. Seeing her beautiful beauty, the landlord forced her family to marry her as a concubine for him, but she did not agree because in her heart she already had someone she loved. Her lover was at that time going out to sea to catch and prepare for their wedding day. But unexpectedly, the landlord saw her unwilling, immediately pushed her to the deserted island, the girl was then starving, exhausted and petrified here. So when visitors enter Trinh Nu cave, right in the middle of the cave is a stone statue of a girl, lying with her long hair, eyes looking out to sea, waiting for her lover to return. Hearing the news of the girl's accident, the boy rushed to find her by boat, but that night a storm arose, causing his boat to break, he washed up on a deserted island. When he woke up, looked into the distance and recognized the girl he loved, he tried to call her but his calls were blown away by the wind. He used the rock to hit the cliff to tell her that he had come. He knocked until he was exhausted and here he was also petrified. The place where he petrified is called Trong cave (Con Trai cave) located about 700-800m from Trinh Nu cave on the opposite side. Although the love story is somewhat romantic, it makes many tourists excited and curious to once visit Trinh Nu cave and Trong cave or at least watch the cave when the train passes.
In 2000, archaeologists discovered in Trinh Nu cave archaeological relics, vestiges of prehistoric inhabitants of Ha Long Culture (about 4,000 years ago).
