The city of Stuttgart is full of Stäffele (stone steps) - about 400 to 600. One of the most beautiful stairs at this peak of Stuttgart is the Eugenstrasse, also popularly known as Eugenstaffel, crowned by the beautiful Galatea on top of Eugensplatz.
To reach Eugensplatz, go from Urbanstraße past the house of poet Eduard Mörikes at Moserstraße 22, then across Werastraße, where the famous artist Willi Baumeister has his studio. Once at the top, Eugensplatz is the end of the Eugenstrasse. Here you can find the Galate Fountain. The statue of Galtea, donated by Queen Olga ( Queen of Württemberg, wife of King Charles I of Württemberg) in 1890, represents a fairy in the world of Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, Galatea was desired by Cyclops Polyphemus, but she rejected him in favor of Acis, a young shepherd. Polyphemus then crushed Acis with a rock. Galatea saw this and created a spring that gushed out from under the rock and made Acis the immortal river god.
When the fountain was inaugurated in 1890, many residents of Stuttgart were not satisfied with the nearly nude Galatea statue, they had many complaints. But Queen Olga then threatened that she would turn the statue upside down so that Galatea's butt was facing the city, only then did the protests end.
On Eugensplatz there is another funny wall: a pillar with a pug on its head. This pug column is reminiscent of the humorous Loriot (Vicco von Bülow). He lived in Stuttgart from 1938 to 1941. He wrote the quote: "A life without pug is possible, but meaningless."
This is an ideal date spot for couples thanks to the great views of the city center. The view here extends from the center of Stuttgart to the west. Not only for couples, Eugensplatz is also a popular meeting place with locals, especially in summer: not only because of the beautiful city views, but also because of the delicious ice cream served. at “Pinguin” – an ice cream parlor with a long tradition.
