Mahalaxmi Temple

Mahalaxmi Temple is located on the north side of Cumballa Hills, its proximity to the coast and Dwajashhamba adds to its charm. Mahalaxmi Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to three Hindu Goddesses: Goddess Laxmi, Goddess Mahakali and Goddess Mahasaraswati.

The idols of the Indians are often adorned with splendid jewelry, including nose rings, pearl necklaces and gold bracelets. This beautiful temple overlooks the Arabian Sea at one end of Breach Candy Road, now known as Bhulabhai Desai Road located in a trendy residential and shopping area.

As one of the oldest temples in the city, Mahalaxmi Temple is famous for its exquisite architecture and intricate design. The main door leading to the ornate temple grounds attracts not only pilgrims but also photography enthusiasts. The temple was built between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Upon entering the temple grounds, one can see a single block of wood covered with silver plates and a deep figure carved in stone. As one goes deeper one notices a lion fixed in its center, facing the gods. Outside can be seen idols of Ganesha and Vithal-Rukmini. The thrones of the gods are intricately carved and partially covered with silver. The temple was built at a cost of INR 80,000.

Navratra festival is the main festival that is celebrated with great grandeur in the temple. The festival lasts for ten days during the Hindu months of Ashwin (around October)

Several stalls located outside the temple sell items used in the worship of the goddesses. Also near the temple are Atria shopping mall and Heera Panna shopping mall.
