Mirabell Palace Experience
Mirabell is an Italian woman's name. Mirabile means "admirable" and bella means "beautiful".
The castle is built of marble with the former royal-archbishop's banquet hall, often considered one of the "most beautiful wedding halls in the world". In the past, the likes of Leopold Mozart and his children, Wolfgang and Nannerl, played here. Today, it regularly hosts weddings, conferences and award ceremonies. The marble hall also provides an atmospheric venue for Schloss Konzerte Mirabell concerts. The "angel stairs", leading up to the Five Elements Hall, are decorated with countless beautiful patterns.
Mirabell Palace is a journey with a colorful history. Today, Mirabell Palace houses the offices of the city as well as the mayor of Salzburg.
An indispensable part of Mirabell Palace is the Baroque garden
The Mirabell Garden was completely redesigned under Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun in 1690. The basic geometric shape, typical of the Baroque period, is still clearly recognizable. The visual orientation towards the cathedral and fortress adds to the grandeur of the gardens - while incorporating them into the city's overall historic ensemble.
The Pegasus Fountain features a sculpture of a horse, Pegasus, which was the work of Kaspar Gras from Innsbruck and was installed in 1913.
Surrounding the Grand Fountain are four groups of characters by Ottavio Mosto (1690). They represent the four elements: fire, air, earth and water.
Palace Chapel: 1726 consecrated to Saint Julian Nepomuk in 1921, Old Catholic church.
The Hedge Theater can be found in the western part of Mirabell Gardens. This is one of the oldest open-air theaters north of the Alps. During the summer, it is home to folk heritage events and other special occasions.
The Dwarf Garden dates back to the rule of Archbishop Franz Anton Fürst Harrach. It originally consisted of 28 dwarves (today 17) made from Untersberg white marble and is the oldest in Europe. Placed during the winter months.
The rose garden with ornamental rose beds is located just south of the Schloss Mirabell building.
Mirabell Gardens, along with Felsenreitschule and Nonnberg Convent, is one of the most important filming locations from the hit Hollywood musical The Sound of Music. In the film, Maria and the children dance around the Pegasus Fountain in front of the palace, singing the song Do Do Mi Mi. At the end of the scene, the Trapp family stands on the steps in front of Rose Hill and sings the last few songs of the song. At the same time, viewers are mesmerized by the unique views throughout the Mirabell garden.
The Mirabell Palace and Garden is free to all visitors.
