Vạn Phước Pagoda is located in Bình Chiến Hamlet, Bình Đại District, Ben Tre Province, covering an area of 12 hectares. It is one of the largest pagodas in the province, known for its spacious and airy grounds, surrounded by thousands of trees and fruit-bearing plants throughout the year. Upon entering the pagoda grounds, visitors will experience the cool, peaceful atmosphere and the light scent of wild grass, creating a tranquil space perfect for worship and meditation.

Vạn Phước Pagoda, like a precious gem, stands in a region that was once wild and swampy, but now has become a sacred destination attracting visitors from all over. The pagoda is especially prominent for its majestic architecture and the giant statue of Phat Di Lac (Laughing Buddha), which draws the attention of many visitors.

1. History of the "Heavenly Pagoda"

Vạn Phước Pagoda was built in 2000, initially covering an area of around 8 hectares, surrounded by marshes and wild grass. The construction project began when Đại Sư Thích Phước Chỉ, a compassionate monk, wanted to build a monastery for meditation and to help those in need. He took in and cared for over 40 sick and mentally disabled people who had nowhere else to go.

With the help of local Buddhists and the community, Vạn Phước Pagoda was gradually built and completed to its present form. In 2008, the Vietnam Buddhist Association recognized the pagoda as an important pilgrimage site.

2. Unique and Distinctive Architecture

Although Vạn Phước Pagoda was built in recent years, it still retains many classic architectural elements typical of Vietnamese Buddhist temples. The pagoda is designed in a style similar to ancient palace architecture, featuring prominent structures such as the Tam Quan Gate, the main hall (Chánh Điện), the Buddha hall, and notably, the giant statue of Phat Di Lac.

2.1. Tam Quan Gate

The Tam Quan Gate at Vạn Phước Pagoda stands out with its brilliant golden hue, amidst the surrounding wild grassland. It is the first structure that catches the eye of visitors. The gate has three traditional entryways, and is built with two tall pillars resembling a small stupa. Especially at sunset, the sunlight shines on the gate, causing the pagoda to appear to glow, creating a mystical and beautiful sight.

2.2. The Main Hall (Chánh Điện)

After passing through the Tam Quan Gate, visitors enter the Chánh Điện (Main Hall) of the pagoda. This hall is dedicated to the worship of several important Buddhist figures, including Phat Bổn Sư Thích Ca, Phat A Di Da, and several statues of the Arhats (La Han), the great disciples of the Buddha. The atmosphere in the main hall is very solemn and peaceful, helping visitors feel calm and at ease as they enter.

The statue of Phat Di Lac here stands at a height of 12.45 meters and weighs 99 tons. It is made of reinforced concrete and coated with gold leaf, with an estimated value of 2.27 billion VND. The statue has a gentle and kind face with a bright smile, sending a message to encourage people to live positively, to let go of suffering, and to always look toward the future with joy and hope.
