Key Features
Tra Su Melaleuca Forest is a typical wetland forest known for its rich biodiversity. It serves as a habitat for numerous water birds, wildlife, and aquatic species within Vietnam's protected forest system. Visitors can easily reach the forest from Chau Doc City by turning left for about 17 km to Nabang Town, then following Provincial Road 948 to marker 6, and continuing left down a small road for nearly 4 km.
Rich Ecosystem
Covering nearly 850 hectares, Tra Su is home to approximately 70 bird species and 11 mammal species, including the rare short-eared bat listed in Vietnam's Red Book. The forest also hosts 10 fish species present year-round and 13 fish species that appear only during the flood season, including two endangered species: the catfish and the white catfish.
In addition to its animal diversity, Tra Su features around 140 plant species, including 22 tree species, 25 shrub species, 10 vine species, 70 grass species, and 13 aquatic plants, as well as various medicinal and ornamental plants. This diversity makes Tra Su an ideal destination for researchers and nature lovers eager to explore the wild.
Cultural Significance
Beyond its ecological value, Tra Su Melaleuca Forest embodies the unique cultural aspects of the communities living nearby, including Khmer and Kinh ethnic groups. They practice various traditional crafts such as weaving, making palm sugar, distilling melaleuca oil, and beekeeping.
