Dating back to 1718, St. Thomas' Church is one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks in the city of Mumbai. Built with the purpose of being a place of prayer for British settlements in Mumbai, St Thomas's Church was the first Anglican Church here and is of high religious importance to the city and the people of Mumbai. .

The church was built in Neoclassical and Neo-Gothic architecture with a white facade. There is a high similarity between St. Thomas's church in Mumbai and St. Thomas's in Ireland. The interior of the church is decorated with stained-glass windows, bronze antiques, and memorials dedicated to English parishioners. The arched windows in the cathedral of St. Thomas add grace to its beautiful architecture. Built during the colonial war, the roof of St. Thomas's Cathedral Church was built with waterproofing materials to provide a safe place.

The foundation stone of St. Thomas' basilica was laid by Gerald Aungier then Governor of the East India Company in 1676 AD and construction work began immediately. But after Aungier's death, the construction of the church also came to a standstill and was revived after nearly half a century.

In 1715, a passionate young missionary named Richard Cobbe arrived in then Bombay and saw the church under construction. He completed the construction of the church within three years from 1715 to 1718 and it was opened to the public at Christmas 1718. Since then, St. Thomas's Church has heard millions of prayers and confessions. and bless the believers with its divinity.

St. Thomas Cathedral was consecrated as a Cathedral in July 1837. Thomas Carr was appointed the first bishop of the church. In late 1838, a clock and a minaret were added to the west end of the church.

The famous Churchgate station of the local and Mumbai area Churchgate is named after one of the gates of St. Thomas's church.
