Melike Hatun Mosque is a new mosque in Ankara, Turkey, opened on September 27, 2017. Located in Ulus, the Cathedral was built in 4 years in Ottoman architecture and where 7,000 people can worship at the same time.

At first glance, the Melike Hatun Mosque (Melike Hatun Camii) in Ankara may look like a historic mosque, but it's actually a modern Ottoman-style mosque. It is located just east of Gençlik Park and is well worth a visit.

Construction of the Melike Hatun Mosque started in 2013 and opened on September 27, 2017. It is named after Melike Hatun, a wealthy woman who lived in the 14th century and built it. many buildings in Ankara. She may be the daughter of Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad III.

The architect of the mosque was Hilmi Şenalp, who drew inspiration from the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan (1490-1588). The mosque covers an area of ​​3,600 square meters (39,000 square feet) and can accommodate 7,000 worshipers.

Below the mosque is a parking lot along with a conference center for 1,000 people. Fountains and beautiful miniatures decorate the garden outside the building.

The Melike Hatun Mosque has four minarets. Each house is 72 meters (236 feet) tall and has three balconies.

The entrance is through a double archway with two horizontal rows. Calligraphic medallions decorate the walls on either side of the door. The door has mother-of-pearl and gold leaf inlays as well as ivory inscriptions.

The prayer hall of the Melike Hatun Mosque is beautifully illuminated by several stained glass windows. There is a small fountain in the center, along the walls decorated with blue tiles and calligraphy.

The dome is 27 meters (89 feet) in diameter and reaches a height of 47 meters (154 feet). There are 16 marble inscriptions on the underside of the dome.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a speech to inaugurate the Melike Hatun Mosque in the capital's central Ulus neighborhood.

During the inauguration ceremony, Erdogan said he hopes the mosque, which he says is "the first in Turkey" will become one of Ankara's icons with its unique style combining Ottoman, Seljuk and modern architecture.
