The festival takes place from April 30 to May 6 every year. The name "darkness" comes from the ancient custom of turning off the lights when carrying a palanquin. To this day the festival is lit up in the evening with colorful paper lanterns. Because of the shimmering in the dark night, this festival attracts many domestic and foreign tourists. Because of the uniqueness of the festival, in 2010, the festival was designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a folklore festival that should be preserved.

The festival takes place in days with many interesting activities. But the most typical procession departs the temple at 18:00 on May 5 and returns at 4:00 on May 6.
