With the desire to help the public and the next generation understand more about the origin and daily life of Taiwanese ancestors, and honor the values of cultural heritage, the Taichung City Council decided to built the Folklore Park in downtown Taichung in July 1984. This is the first Folklore Park built in Taiwan. The entire park has a total area of 1.6 hectares, was officially opened in March 1990 and is filled with the folk heritage of the people who lived in coastal Fujian during the late Qing and early post-Qing period.
The main areas inside the park's premises include the Folklore Hall, the Folklore and Cultural Heritage Hall, and the Folk Art area. They are further enhanced by the Folk Arts Square and the Folk Arts Hall. In addition, you also have the opportunity to enjoy the brilliant beauty of flowers blooming in the large artificial garden, where you can enjoy an airy space adorned with lotus ponds and traditional buildings. classical Chinese style.
The basement of the Folklore Hall, an ancient style construction, is used for exhibition purposes. All the exhibits there have unique historical roots, conveying the spirit of exploring the daily life of early Taiwanese residents. The Folk Art Room is the venue for ceremonial activities, folklore workshops, cultural meetings and exchanges, as well as performing arts. Visitors here not only enjoy the scenery, but also have the opportunity to reminisce about the works of previous generations.
The Folklore Hall is a building built in the traditional style with 4 combined compartments. It was a true representation of the lifestyle of that era. The basement of the hall is an exhibition hall, where various agricultural tools, daily necessities and costumes of different Aboriginal tribes can be found. In the center of the Folklore Hall is the display of altars, chairs, octagonal tables, Chinese calligraphy and paintings and worshiping objects. Here you can find red oak beds, dressing tables and mahogany chairs. The office is in the east wing, on the walls are many Chinese-style calligraphy and paintings. The west wing showcases the living space of the younger generations and their families. In the kitchen there are displays of wooden tables, wooden cabinets, antique fire stoves, rain clothes, all showing different stages of daily peasant life; especially tea culture. With a cup of tea in hand and surrounded by the sweet melodies of nature, one can easily forget the hustle and bustle of the modern city.
The Folk Hall is built in the Fukien style with the highlight being a U-shaped building in a traditional style, used for various folk and cultural performances. Artists here will demonstrate skills in dough-making, paper-cutting, bamboo knitting and other traditional skills. During festivals and holidays, the park comes alive with acrobatic performances, dragon and lion dances, traditional wedding ceremonies, folk flute and drum music shows…
The park is open from 09.00 AM to 05.00 PM (weekdays except Monday). Ticket price is NT$80. From Taichung city center, you can take bus number 58, 71, 700, 701 and get off at Chongde Junior High School (Folklore Park) stop.
