Today, we will visit one of the most famous and unique Khmer pagodas in the Southwestern region of Vietnam – Nodol Pagoda, also known by its colloquial name, Stork Pagoda. This place is not only a cultural and spiritual tourist destination but also a blend of nature and humanity, where thousands of storks have made their nests for over a century.
1. Nodol Pagoda – A Journey into Khmer Culture
Nodol Pagoda is located in Cây Da hamlet, Đại An commune, Trà Cú district, about 40 km from the center of Trà Vinh city. From National Highway 54, turning onto the road leading to the pagoda, you will encounter the grand gate decorated with the unique patterns and motifs characteristic of the Khmer people. Built in 1677, Nodol Pagoda bears the historical imprint of over 300 years. The name Wat Phnô Đôn in Khmer means "pagoda on the coconut-planted sandy hill." However, locals call it Stork Pagoda because for hundreds of years, it has become the natural home of thousands of storks, including white storks, ibises, red-headed storks, and rare species like yellow-beaked and golden-headed storks.
2. Unique Architecture – A Distinctive Feature of Southern Khmer Culture
Entering the pagoda's courtyard, you will feel the peace under the shade of ancient Hopea and resin trees. The large courtyard of the pagoda is particularly embraced by lush green bamboo groves and vast rice fields, creating a harmonious scene between nature and architecture. The pagoda gate is intricately decorated with Khmer mythical patterns, including images of the divine bird Kâyno, the four-faced god Mohabrom, and the god Riehu, symbolizing prosperity, protection, and strength.
The main hall of the pagoda is built with curved dragon-tail-like tiles, with pointed tower tops symbolizing the sacred Xôme mountain. Inside, the main hall is solemnly arranged with a large statue of Buddha Shakyamuni in the center, surrounded by colorful murals depicting Buddha's life.
3. Stork Pagoda – Where Nature Converges and the "Kingdom of Storks"
The special feature of Nodol Pagoda is its "special residents" – thousands of storks and the peaceful natural scenery. In the early morning or at sunset, you will see flocks of white storks flying across the sky, creating a lively and majestic picture. The storks come here not only because of the tranquil environment but also, according to the monks, because they are sheltered by the sacred atmosphere of the pagoda. A legend says that the ancestors of these storks chose this place to reside over 100 years ago, and since then, they have considered the pagoda their home, generation after generation.
Additionally, surrounding the pagoda are vast rice fields, combined with the shade from bamboo groves, resin trees, and hopea trees in the courtyard, bringing a sense of peace and tranquility.
Dear visitors, Nodol Pagoda is not only a religious structure but also a vivid symbol of the harmony between humans and nature. We hope that this visit will leave you with memorable experiences and a sense of calm and peace. We hope that what Tatinta shares today will help you fully appreciate the beauty of Stork Pagoda. Wishing you unforgettable and meaningful experiences here! 😊
