The Boston Library, opened in 1852, is honored as the first free city library in America.

The Boston Public Library was founded in 1848 and Architect Charles Follen McKim designed the current building in 1895. The interior of the Library is built with Renaissance architecture and the walls display paintings. paintings by John Singer Sargent and Edwin Abbey. The granite medallions on the archways are the work of the famous American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Three sets of bronze doors in the vestibule created by Daniel Chester French. It has no entrance fee and is a great place to increase your knowledge of Art and Architecture

Across from the library, across a lawn where you can enjoy a picnic lunch, is Trinity Church, a red sandstone building designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson in a distinctive style. his, known as Richardson Romanesque. Trinity is considered his masterpiece. Inside the building, the murals, frescoes and decorations painted inside are by John La Farge and much of the stained glass is by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. In one corner of the square is the Boston Academy, Fairmont Copley Plaza, together with the beautiful glass walls of a skyscraper, creating a beautiful cityscape.
